Orgill/Argyle Origins

Hello There Joe,

I hope you find the attached graphic of some interest. It shows
the distribution of Orgill/Argyle surnames as taken from the IGI and
centred on Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. Top half shows Orgills lower
half Argyles

The Orgill surname and its spelling variations are clearly seen to be
concentrated around B.o.T., Gresley and Ashby de la Zouch and therefore
straddling the the Staffs., Derbs. and Leics. county boundaries. Earliest
Orgill recorded in my IGI records is 1554 in B.o.T.

The Argyles in their various spellings do occur in the the above area but
are most dense in the western half of Leicestershire in Hinckley and the
surrounding villages and appear to have common roots with the notable
exception of the family in Market Bosworth, who though Argyle in name are
descendents of Matthew Orgill, shown sometimes as Matthew Argyle, of Church
Gresley.

In the British Isles as a whole there are early entries for
Argyll/Argyle and a few Argyles in Ireland, one entry for Orgill in Scotland. Earliest
Argyle recorded, 1245 Scotland, 1583 Howden, Yorks.

As I've mentioned before instances of Argyle becoming Orgill and vice
versa are fairly common around that hot bed of Orgills, Gresley, B.o.T. etc.
Both surnames exhibit the same range of variations, such as, Hargill, Horgill;
Argyll, Orgyll and Argaile, Orgaile. The non-related Cornish name Argall
also appears as Orgall. I think many surname variations can be put down to
the low level of literacy so opening the way for local accents to affect
the written records.

        All the Best, Vic
