My father, Douglas william Orgill, did indeed visit a place called Orgill in the Orkneys - he was a journalist and was researching for an article. He (and his father and grandfather) cam e from Walsall, near Birmingham in the Midlands.
There's also an Orgill School in Cumbria but I don't know how it got its name.

Hello Joe,
I tried to send you an e-mail, but it bounced. Has your address changed?
Vic Arguile in Australia told me about your webpage and says that you're also from the same Argyle/Argill/Orgill line that I am. My great-great-grandmother, Mary Ann Argyle, was born in Birmingham and emigrated to the US with her family. My father was named after her, as "Argyle" was his middle name, and my niece has just named her new baby "William Argyle" [surname McFarland].
I've had a look at your webpages - very interesting and well done. I'll have to spend some more time there looking around. On the "click here to see my own lines documented," however, the link doesn't seem to be valid. as the page it goes to says it no longer exists.
Although I was born and raised in Arizona, I married an Englishman and now live in York. At the moment, I am involved in doing his family genealogy from scratch, but I like to keep up with my own family lines and hope to be able to put some more time in there at some point.
Vic sends you his greetings, by the way.
Best regards,
Diane [Shumway] Ellerton

Hi Joe!
My nephew sent me your web page URL. My sister married
Charles William Orgill. I don't know much about this line, but hope to
get some more info. from him. He says his cousin has more genealogy, but
I am having trouble getting it from him because he doesn't see why we
want to know all that "stuff". Here is all I have: Charles William Orgill II, b. Aug.23, 1928 in
Pittsburgh, PA. (His father had the same name, but died when "Chuck" was very
young.) He married Anna May Tubbs, Sept.10, 1949 in Greensburg, PA and they had 3 boys, two of whom are married and have children of their own.
I have spent more time on my Dad's lines, so haven't pursued
this line very hard, but my nephew and his wife are interested in genealogy so thought I would look up your web page. Very nice!.
Sincerely,
Sally Tubbs Mansell

The previous message dated 26/05/00 is actually older than that so the information may be outdated.
We are a clan of Orgills living in Rainworth, Mansfield Nottinghamshire, UK. My husband is Gary Orgill and has lived in Rainworth all of his life.
Gary has a brother called Lee who is a nurse in the local casualty department and some English residents may have seen him in the press recently as he was awarded for his bravery in saving his collegue who was being stabbed by a casualty patient.
Gary's father is Keith and he was born in Blidworth, Notts in 1930. (Blidworth is the next village to Rainworth).
Keith's father was Thomas Orgill who was born in Nottingham.
Thomas Orgill's father was a Benjamin Orgill who was born in Ogley Hay, Staffordshire in 1877. He married an Emily Parkin in Chasetown, Staffs in 1899 and moved to Nottingham sometime afterwards.
In the 1881 census when Benjamin was 4 years old he was documented as living in the "Trawfords building", Hammerwich with his father George Henry Orgill and his mother Mary Ann Orgill. He also had two siblings called George Orgill b1771 ish and James Taller b1772 ish ( I am not sure why the surname is different)
There is another family of Orgills also living in the Trawford buildings. The head of the family is Alfred Orgill.
We think George Henry Orgill had been married previously as he is named at the christning of twins in 1863. The twins are John Thomas and Harriet Orgill. In the 1881 census there is a John Thomas living in the Orgill building at Hammerwich with his "grandfather" Henry Orgill so we think Henry may be George Henry's father. ( this is getting complicated!) We are trying to find information on Henry Orgill because we think he may have come from Newhall, therefore linking him with the Derbyshire Orgills.
We are trying to contact Ralph Orgill who I have contacted in the past ( his email is not working) to see if these Orgills are related to his clan.
We didn't know there was a Hammerwich link at first and we mistakenly thought that they came from Cannock.
Thanks for your time and we would be glad of any help from anyone. Caz Orgill

Hello,
My name is Jim Orgel. I stumbled upon your genealogy page on the
Internet, and boy, was I ever surprised! I have been interested in family
history for a long time, and I thought my name was quite unique. Then I saw
all the similar names you have listed and did I ever get an eye opener.
I have traced my own family back from upstate New York, where I was born
and where my ancestors settled in about the 1870s, having arrived from the
Alsace-Lorraine region in France. (By the way, we pronounce the name so as
to rhyme with "cordial.") The Orgel family had lived in the area between
Strasbourg and Nancy, where they lived (and still reside) since the 1700s.
The earliest record of an ancestor that I have traced is an Adam Orsel,
who was probably born about 1690 in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of
Germany. His seven children usually had their name spelled as Orschel, and
when, in about the 1720s, the family moved to France, the name changed to
Orgel.
I have done some research about the name origin as well. In French, an
"orgelet" is a place where sheep are kept. In German, an "orgel" is the
musical organ instrument. In heraldry, "or" and "gules" are the names for
the colors gold and red, respectively.
Presently, I live near Charleston, South Carolina, with my wife and two
sons. My brother and his son live in Rochester, NY. I have a cousin in
Virginia, who has a son there and one in MA. These are the only Orgels I know
in this country I am related to.
I have quite a bit of research material available, but I have not put it
on-line as yet. I am open to inquiries from others, and you can post my name
on your web-site, if you wish, so that others may get in touch if they choose.
Thanks very much for taking the time and effort for putting your site
together.
Wishing you well,
Jim Orgel

Hi, We are a family of Orgills living in Rainworth, Mansfield,
nottinghamshire, UK. Although we are not the branch directly related to
Ralph Orgill, we do have some Staffordshire roots because my husband's
great grandfather came from Ogley Hay, Cannock chase. His name was
Benjamin Orgill and his father was George Henry Orgill. We are
interested in how the Orgills migrated to staffordshire and would like
to know who we are related to. We have a little more information, if you
are interested, about Nottinghamshire Orgills and we would appreciate
any information you may have. I tried to leave a comment on the web

Hello, I'm new to both surfing and genealogy, but since Bonnie contacted my dad -Derek Wilton Orgill, I've become very interested. My family
spent an interesting day around Church Gresley Cemetery finding the Orgills buried there. So far we've got, Derek > Warwick Lionel >George
d8.11.1951 aged 84, brothers Alf, Joe, sister Clara ...and a lot more work to do !
There are 6 more Orgill families buried in the cemetery, but I can't seem to get into your comments page to share the info. Hope this works.

I am still alive. I apologize that this guest page has
not been working. I changed providers about 6 months
ago, and I am just barely fixing all of the little
things that didn't work. I still want to add to
the ORGILL page. I will be adding information that Jim Orgel
sent me concerning his genealogy in France and Germany.
I believe we are related. I think the Orgel's came to Normandy,
then over to England in 1066. See page for details.

Looking for Thomas &Ann Walden Jones Family from Wales and Hunter, UT. Son Thomas (Ephraim) my GrGrandpa and I would like any information I can get. The family is gone and all the information is gone now. I would like to hear from anyone who knew these people. My Grandmother was Susie Winnifred Jones Whitehead born 1882 Salt Lake City, UT area. Her mother was Elizabeth Davies Jones Johnson from Glamorgan, Wales. She married Ephraim Jones 1878 in Wales. Ephraim died in 1902 and Elizabeth married a Johnson but no information on him. She lived in Heber, UT until 1927 when she moved to Butte, MT to be with Susie and her family. Elizabeth died in 1930 and is buried with Ephraim, two baby boys and Alfred Abraham and Hannah Gibbs Jones in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Ephraim and Eliz are not listed in the LDS Family Files because Ephraim is listed as dieing in 1861. I just learned of this after searching for five years. Susie died in 1955 when i was 7yrs. old and my Dad was killed in 1959 so any information I could have had is gone.
If you have any information I would appreciate it. I did find that Coral Lewis Huish is one of the relatives. Thank you for your time and please let me know if you have any information. Norma King

Hi, I was just looking for information about turning in updated genealogy to the Salt Lake Geneology Library, hopefully, using the internet instead of sending in a disk. Or even where to send a disk and what I needed to do etc. I just happened upon your page and found it very interesting. You must have been working for a long time to have so much information. My mother did a lot of genealogy before she passed away but I didn't get very interested until just recently. I don't really know where to start or what to do except that I have downloaded the files from BYU library and updated them with any information I could add. Just not sure what to do with them now. Reading your page made me wish that I had gotten interested while she was alive so that we could have worked together. I enjoyed reading about your family. Lynda

Hello,
My great-grandmother was Elizabeth Orgill, born 1855 in Newhall,Derbyshire, England. She married Alfred Henry Pike in 1878 at St James' Church Nottingham, and was buried in 1920 (?) in Repton churchyard. Her family consisted of her father Thomas, mother Jane (nee Staley), brothers Thomas George, James, and Frank, and sister Ellen Jane. Ellen Jane married Arthur Beighton in 1880. I have no trace of Alfred Henry Pike after 1879. The story was that he died at sea. I'd really like to know if it's true. There are a lot of Orgills out there. Does anyone know ?

Adding to my earlier comments.I understand the family migrated from the Channel Islands on the Eve of the massacre of St Bathlomonew's Day before Henry of Navarre massacred the Protestants in France.I have seen a family concordance passed down from father to son for digging the fathers grave. In each generation the name was changed from d'orgueil until it became Orgill. This family dwelt at Meersham.

Joe: I just love your Site - I have Orgills back in
Newhall, Derbys. - my main name is Parker, but
they seemed to marry Orgills from time to time.
Haven't traced any direct Orgills, but am working
on it. I've noticed that from 1660 onwards,
there are Parker/Orgill/Peace/Heap/Orme families
marrying one another -- and I think the Parker
families were the most commonly named amongst
them. Am having a lot of trouble connecting
and sorting them.
Most of the Parker entries on the IGI are Patron
Submissions, so I'm surmising that some of them
became LDS members at some time or other. I did
send for some copy entries and contacted the person
who had entered them, but had no reply. I wonder
if anything would be "on file" in SLC??
Again - am most appreciative of your site and
look forward to future visits....
Cheers from the Antipodes.... Valerie K.

I have started with the pictures of Charles Robert Goddard Woodburys of Hinckley Utah and the John Raymon Lees of Willard Utah. My great grandfather was robert orgill, born 1830 in LEICESTER, died 1905 in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia. I have no idea who his parents were. He had 4 brothers, Thomas Orgill, Matthew Orgill, and Henry Orgill, who went to the USA.
Robert Orgill had seven children, Matthew William, (my grandfather), twins graceshe viola and zeporah elizabeth, leonard clarence, herbert edward, victoria alexandria and sydnah australia.
I have quite a bit of information on the four boys who came to australia, as far as who married who, and what children they had. If any of this information is of value to someone please contact me. I would like to get information on the Matthew William Orgill who went to the states. I think he was into carpentry. Please contact me on the internet or by mail, my address is as follows;

I am totally amazed that there are so many Orgills out there. In brief, I am Elizabeth Orgill, daughter of Peter Orgill. My sister is Lucy Orgill. I was born in Devon in England and brought up in Cormwall. I now live in Essex but my dad still lives in Devon where he was bought up by Harold Victor Orgill (married to Pearl), who are sadly missed as they passed away in 1996. My dad is particularly interested in his family tree and I will be passing the info on re these superb pages! Here I am the ARGYLE rose amongst the ORGILL thorns. I'm really interested with the latest correspondence re the origins of the Orgill name. For what it's worth, the OGLE name is well documenmted in Black's Surnames of Scotland, at it wouldn't take much for it to be pronounced Orgill in the Derbs. and Staffs. dialect as opposed to the more civilised tones of the Leics. one. Further to what Sam Orgill sugests, there's the Scots name Ogilvy (ie) to consider. Incidently my family name was spelt as ARGUILE in 1706 and one family researcher claims this as derived from Orgueil, old French for pride,

Joe, my Name is Richard Orgill and my wife is Barbara and we live in

a more familiar name and I work at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
I do not have E-mail at Home yet until I retire in March or June, have not
made up my mind which month yet.
I have a lot of data on the Orgill's because genealogy has been done on our
family. If you can send me you address or fax # I can tell you more about the
Orgill's I know.
There are Orgill's In Rexburg Idaho, There is a store in San Francisco that
has the name of Richard Orgell's Gift Shop.
There is a Monte Orgill that works for one of the Radio Station in San
Francisco..I know my ancestors came from NewShire England and also when they

Hi Joe.
Interesting to finally see all these Orgills; up until last year, I
had only run into one other Orgill who wasn't directly related to me.
But I think it may be mostly because my father (James Edward Orgill)
left Utah pretty early on, after his mother died and father remarried
and then died a few years later. I don't know much about his side of
the family at all...so your mail was a nice surprise. People always
ask me what nationality my name is, and I've read a few references to
"orgille" meaning "pride" in French. So I was particularly interested
in that, although it seems mostly British? At any rate, thanks for the
mail, and a few more clues. I don't have much information to share,
but would be interested in anything that seems relevant.

Dear Joe,
Thank you for your note regarding our clan. Here my 4 year old boy
Andrew will only allow me a few minuites to confirm that my family in
Canada (including alex@sidefx.com) has all of our direct relatives still
living in the Derbyshire area. My father, Douglas Orgill married to
Margaret emigrated to Vancouver, B.C. in 1954 with myself and sister
Susanne. My brother Alex was born in Vancouver in 1961. We had a move
to Edmonton, Alberta and then a move to Toronto where my brother still
lives while my sister and myself reside in a quaint university town near
Toronto called Guelph.
I shall write again soon with some stories I know of the Orgills. Some
on your e-mail list I know of.
Thank you for getting in touch.

Dear Joe,
Enjoyed very much your Genealogy Home Page.
My name is Lynn W. Johnson and I am also a descendent of Joseph Orgill and
Sarah Whetton.
My Great Grandmother was Mary Ann Orgill (b. 1877). Her parents were Mark
Orgill (b. 1851) and Rachael Isabell Smith (b. 1859). Mark's parents were
Thomas Edward Orgill (b.1821) and Ann Cartwright. Thomas' parents were
Joseph Orgill and Sarah Whetton.
I had several Orgill obituaries clipped out of the Deseret News (one was
your mother) that your page helped me tie into Orgill genealogy on my
computer.
I have a typed copy of the Diary of Joseph Orgill (b. 1814). You probably
already have it, but it not, I'll be happy to get you a copy of it. It
lists lots of names and dates and also Patriarchal blessings. My copy was
typed by my cousin Karen S. Williams.
I'm very new to the Internet and E-mail so I hope you receive this all

Dear Joe,
Thanks for your reply to my email; yes, you can add my email address to
your page if you want.
I don't know much about the branch of the Orgill family which I
belong to, but the following might be of interest to someone ...
I am Sheila Orgill, born Sheila Watson in Lincoln in 1958.
I am married to Ian Orgill who was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1962.
Ian and I married in 1991 and we have a daughter, Jennifer, born in
Birmingham in 1992.
Ian's father was Harry Orgill who was born in the Birmingham area and had
a daughter Rita before moving to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and marrying Ian's
mother, Winnie Davison.
Ian has 4 brothers and a sister who still live in the North-East :
Bill Davison born 1955, Colleen Davison born 1956, John Davison born
1959, Chris Orgill born 1962 and Maurice Orgill born 1964.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who thinks they know of our
family.

Hi there, sorry for the long time before this response, but the computer's
been in the shop.
My Dad's just making some notes on our family history, and then I'll throw
that up on my page. I saw your list of Orgills to date-I never would have
thought there were that many in the world, much less a couple of states! I
don't have IRC as yet.
Anyway, I took our name history off the wall, thought you might be
interested. It comes from the Historical Research Center:
The English surname Orgill is of toponymic origin being derived from
the place where the original bearer lived or held land. In this instance, the surname is derived from the place name Mount Orgueil, a well known
fortress on the Isle of Jersey. Thus the surname Orgill signifies "one from
Mount Orgueil." The place name Mount Orgueil is derived from the Old Frence
"orgueil" meaning "pride" and translates to "Pride Mountain." Alternatively,
the surname Orgill is of nickname origin, being derived from a personal
attribute of the original bearer. In this case, the surname is again from
the Old Frence "orgueil" meaning "pride" and referred to the "proud one."
Finally the surname Orgill is of occupational origin. Occupational surnames
derive their origin from the work, trade, or profession of the initial
bearer. Here the surname Orgill is derived from the Germanic word "orgel"
meaning "organ", and referred to an organ player or a maker of organs.
Variants of the surname Orgill include Orgel, Orgles, Organ, and Organer.
References to the surname Orgill or to its variants are found in
English documents that date back to the twelfth century. Edmun Liorgil (le
orgil) was mentioned in the "Early Charters of the Cathedral of St. Paul,
London" (1198-1211). Walter Orgouyl was recorded in the "Ministers' Accounts
for the Earldom of Cornwall" in 1297. Adam le Organystre of Suffolk wasrecorded in the "Pinchbeck Register" in 1327. Gerard Orgul was registered in
London in 1305 in the "Calendar of Early Mayors' Court Rolls". William
Organall of Suffolk was bound for America in 1736. The Orgill family of
Beccles, Co. Suffolk was ennobled and was granted the following coat-of-arms.
Blazon of Arms: Argent, a fess between three crescents, each surmounted by a
fleur-de-lis gules.
Crest: A buffalo's head sable, gorged with a wreath of roses proper.
Origin: England.

Joe,
Thanks for your interest in our site. I have checked the UK phone
book which I happen to have on a CD-ROM. There are over 200 Orgill's
in the UK. There are precisely 28 J. Orgill's listed. Most of these
come from the Derby region, though no one is listed in Lichfield.
Two of the J Orgill's that might interest you are at
22 Holloway Road, Alvaston, Derby (011) 44 1332 573538
87 Chain Lane, Littleover, Derby (011) 44 1332 514351
You might try contacted either of these, BTW I took a look at
your home page and note you are a member of LDS. Usually I would
turn down the request you made but having visited Salt Lake I know
what a beautiful city it is (so clean) and also how important
tracing ancestry is to you.
It would be my pleasure if you would mention our WEB site, particularly
our hotel guide in your links page...

Hi Joe
I will try to give as much detail about my immediate family as I can remember.
Grandfather:-- JOHN ORGILL.
Born about 1870, birth would be registered in Lichfield. Died about 1942,
death would be registered in Lichfield. His wife was Mary Ann Mortiboy.
John had 5 children. George, Horace, Beatrice, Mary, Ann.
George was born in Brownhills about 1897 and his birth would be registered
in Lichfield. He served in the 1914-1918 war and when he was demobilised he
moved to Rainworth, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. I know that he
started a new branch of the family there, I have no further knowledge of him
or his family.
Horace was born in 1900 in Brownhills and would be registered in Lichfield.
He died in 1946 in Brownhills and this would be registered in Cannock. He
had 6 children, 3 of whom died at birth or soon after. Alive are Ralph
(me), I was born in 1924, Doreen who was born in 1926 and Keith born 1936.
We were all born in Brownhills. His wife, my mother was Dora Roberts.

born in 1958, Malcolm born in 1960. All were born in Brownhills and were
registered in Cannock. My wife`s name was Hazel Challinor.
